Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn at Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. In her early years, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father passed away and forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become cleaner or waitress to help them survive. Ruth lived in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. However, she left school only after two years in order to pursue an acting career. This was not an easy path to take. While she was offered an interview in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication but no theater jobs was offered. After working as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she resigned and went back to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as an actor who was steady. She earned money by working during the day as an usherette. She was a drama student at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
